Between the mornings

The dream project that never came to fruition...

between the mornings is an island that functions as an indoor space outside. Atop floorboards made from black Sørøya gabbro stone, a tall, shiny line marks this site-specific artwork like a needle on a map. The slender steel construction mirrors its surroundings, either gleaming with reflected sunlight or vanishing into the overcast sky. Up close it becomes apparent that the needle is in fact a clock, ticking by the second with deep, pulsating thuds.

Through narrow windows in the lower part of the structure, a meter-long pendulum swings in tandem with the pulse. Next to the needle lies a pink-striped bed made of Fauske marble. At the tip of the island, facing the Oslo fjord, lies another bed large enough to accompany a couple or group of friends. The pinkish stone is reminiscent of early-morning hues or an evening sky at dusk, and offers an invitation to stay.

between the mornings is a collaborative proposal for the Museum Island Competition, located right outside the new Munch Museum. Edvard Munch’s painting Between the Clock and the Bed (1940-1943) served as the main inspiration for A K Dolven’s project.
